How the Moon sign calculator compares both zodiacs
Vedara calculates the Moon at your birth instant with Swiss Ephemeris. The page shows the same Moon in two coordinate systems: the sidereal Lahiri zodiac used for Vedic readings, and the tropical zodiac used by most Western Moon sign calculators.
The Vedic card gives the sidereal rashi, degree, nakshatra and pada. The Western card gives the tropical sign and degree. The difference between them is the Lahiri ayanamsha for the exact birth moment, computed by the engine and returned with the result.
If your Moon is close to a sign boundary, the two zodiacs often show different signs. If the Moon is far enough from that boundary, both systems can still name the same sign even though the degree positions differ.
Why your Vedic and Western Moon signs differ
Western astrology normally measures signs from the March equinox, so Aries begins at a seasonal point. Vedic astrology normally measures signs against a fixed-star reference. Because Earth slowly precesses, those starting points drift apart over time.
That separation is the ayanamsha. Around the present era it is close to 24 degrees, which is most of a 30-degree sign. This is why many people see one Moon sign in a Western calculator and the previous sign in a Vedic calculator.
Which one should you use?
Use the zodiac that matches the system you are reading. Both cards are valid calculations in their own frames. The tropical result helps you compare Vedara with Western astrology websites, while the sidereal result is the one Vedara uses for Janma Rashi, nakshatra, dashas and personalised timing.
Interpretation is a separate layer from calculation. A Moon in Taurus tropical and a Moon in Aries sidereal are not competing facts. They are two ways of measuring the same Moon from different zodiac starting points.
How the ayanamsha is calculated
The calculator converts your local birth date and time to UTC using the IANA timezone for the selected place. Swiss Ephemeris then gives the Moon position and the Lahiri ayanamsha for that instant. The ayanamsha is rounded to six decimal places in the API result.
Vedara also publishes a Lahiri Ayanamsha by Year dataset for checking the long-term movement of this value. The exact result on this page is still computed for your birth instant, not typed into the page or estimated from a table.
Methodology
Ephemeris: Swiss Ephemeris (pyswisseph 2.10.3.2). Zodiac systems shown: sidereal Lahiri for the Vedic result and tropical for the Western result. Ayanamsha: Lahiri / Chitrapaksha at the birth instant.
Input handling: birth date (YYYY-MM-DD), optional birth time (HH:MM, 24-hour), birth coordinates and IANA timezone ID. If birth time is omitted the engine substitutes 12:00 local time and lowers confidence when the Moon is near a sign or nakshatra boundary.
Boundary detection: a sign boundary notice is triggered when the sidereal Moon is within 1 degree of a sign edge. A nakshatra boundary notice is triggered within 0.5 degrees of a nakshatra edge. The methodology URL for this tool is /tools/vedic-moon-sign-calculator#methodology.

- Why is my moon sign different on different websites?
- Your Moon sign can differ because websites may use different zodiacs. Most Western calculators use the tropical zodiac, which is tied to the seasons. Vedic calculators usually use a sidereal zodiac, often Lahiri, which is currently about 24 degrees earlier. A birth near a sign boundary can also change with timezone or birth-time corrections.
- Is the Vedic moon sign more accurate?
- The Vedic Moon sign is not more accurate as a calculation in every context. It is accurate within the sidereal Lahiri zodiac used by Vedara. The Western Moon sign is accurate within the tropical zodiac. Vedara uses the sidereal result for readings because Jyotish timing methods are built from that zodiac.
- What is the ayanamsha?
- The ayanamsha is the angular difference between the tropical zodiac and a sidereal zodiac. Vedara uses the Lahiri, or Chitrapaksha, ayanamsha. At your birth instant the calculator subtracts that value from the tropical Moon longitude to get the sidereal Vedic longitude, then uses that sidereal position for rashi, nakshatra and pada.
- Can my moon sign change?
- Your natal Moon sign does not change after birth, but a calculator result can change if the input changes. A corrected birth time, a different timezone, or a different zodiac can move the Moon across a sign boundary. The Moon also moves quickly, so unknown birth times are less certain near sign or nakshatra edges.
