How the birth nakshatra calculator works

Enter your birth date, time, and place above and the calculator finds the nakshatra — the lunar mansion — the Moon occupied at the moment you were born, along with its pada (quarter), ruling planet, presiding deity, and symbol. The Moon’s sidereal longitude is computed for your exact birth moment and location, then mapped onto the 27 mansions of the Vedic sky.

The birth nakshatra (janma nakshatra) is one of the most personal points in Vedic astrology. Where Western astrology leads with the Sun sign, Jyotish leads with the Moon — and the nakshatra divides the Moon’s zodiac twenty-seven ways instead of twelve, giving a far more specific signature. Each mansion spans 13°20′ and carries its own mythology: a deity, a symbol, a temperament, and a planetary ruler.

That ruler is why this calculation matters beyond personality: it sets the first period of your Vimshottari dasha cycle, the timing backbone of Vedic astrology. A worked example: a Moon at 12° Virgo falls in Hasta, the mansion of the hand, ruled by the Moon itself — so life begins in a Moon mahadasha, and the sequence of every later period follows from there. Your nakshatra is also the basis of traditional compatibility matching and muhurta selection.

A note on accuracy: the Moon moves through one nakshatra roughly every day, so most birth dates map to a single answer regardless of time. But if you were born near a mansion boundary — the Moon crosses one about once every 24 hours — the exact time and place decide which side you fall on. If your result surprises you and your birth time is uncertain, that boundary is the first thing to check.

Frequently asked questions

What is my birth nakshatra?
Your birth nakshatra is the lunar mansion the Moon occupied when you were born. Enter your birth details in the calculator above and it returns the nakshatra, its pada, ruler, deity, and symbol.
What is a pada?
Each nakshatra divides into four padas (quarters) of 3°20′ each. The pada refines the reading — it links your nakshatra to a navamsa sign and shades how its qualities express — and some traditional techniques, like name syllables, are chosen by pada.
Is the nakshatra the same as my Moon sign?
They are related but different resolutions of the same position. The Moon sign is one of 12 signs of 30 degrees; the nakshatra is one of 27 mansions of 13°20′. Every nakshatra sits within one or two signs — Hasta, for example, lies entirely in Virgo.
Why does my nakshatra matter for timing?
The Vimshottari dasha cycle — Vedic astrology’s main timing system — starts from your birth nakshatra’s ruling planet, and how far the Moon had moved through the mansion sets the remaining length of that first period. Every dasha date in your life traces back to this single point.
