How the Vimshottari dasha calculator works
Enter your birth details above and the calculator works out your Vimshottari dasha timeline: the planetary period (mahadasha) running right now, the sub-period (antardasha) inside it, when each began and ends, and the full sequence of periods across the 120-year cycle. Everything is computed from the Moon’s exact sidereal position at your birth — the same deterministic calculation the Vedara app uses.
Vimshottari dasha is the backbone of Vedic prediction. The system assigns each of nine planets a fixed span — from the Sun’s 6 years to Venus’s 20 — and orders them in a cycle that starts from the nakshatra the Moon occupied when you were born. How far the Moon had travelled through that nakshatra sets how much of the first period remained, which is why an accurate birth time matters more here than in almost any other Vedic calculation.
How to read the result: the mahadasha names the multi-year chapter — the planet whose themes dominate this stretch of life. The antardasha colours the current season within it. A worked example: someone whose Moon was in Hasta at birth starts in a Moon mahadasha; if they are now in Jupiter–Saturn, the broad chapter carries Jupiter’s expansion while Saturn’s sub-period asks for patience and structure inside it. Two people with the same Sun sign can be in entirely different dashas — this is why Vedic guidance is personal.
Limitations worth knowing: an uncertain birth time shifts the balance of the first period, which can move every later period boundary by months or even years — if your reported time is approximate, treat boundary dates as approximate too. And the dasha names the theme, not the verdict: how a Saturn period actually lands depends on Saturn’s condition in your chart and the transits running through it, which is the layer the Vedara app reads daily.
Frequently asked questions
- What dasha am I in right now?
- Enter your birth date, time, and place in the calculator above — it returns your current mahadasha and antardasha with their start and end dates, plus the full timeline of periods before and after.
- What is the Vimshottari dasha system?
- It is the principal timing system of Vedic astrology: a 120-year cycle divided among nine planets (Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17, Ketu 7, Venus 20 years), with the starting point set by the Moon’s nakshatra at birth. Each period is subdivided into antardashas in the same order.
- How accurate does my birth time need to be?
- More accurate than for most calculations. The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, and your progress through the birth nakshatra determines how much of the first dasha remained — a time off by an hour can shift later period boundaries by weeks or months.
- Is a Saturn or Rahu dasha something to fear?
- No. Traditional sources describe every planet’s period as a theme, not a sentence — Saturn periods reward structure and endurance, Rahu periods amplify ambition and change. How one actually unfolds depends on that planet’s placement in your own chart.
