What a dasha is, in plain English

A dasha is a planetary chapter of your life. Vedic astrology gives each of nine planets a fixed number of years, lines them up in a set order, and hands your life to one of them at a time. The planet in charge is your mahadasha (main period). Inside it runs a shorter antardasha (sub-period), so you are always living one chapter and one season within it.

Where you start in that sequence comes from the Moon at your birth. The Moon sits in one of 27 nakshatras (lunar mansions), each ruled by a planet, and that planet takes the first chapter. How far the Moon had travelled through its nakshatra sets how much of that first chapter was left. Everything after follows from there, which is why two people with the same Sun sign can be in completely different chapters.

The nine dasha periods and how long they last

The order never changes. Your starting planet depends on your birth nakshatra, then the cycle continues from that point and wraps around. The themes below are the traditional associations; how a period actually feels depends on where that planet sits in your own chart.

If you know Western astrology

Popular Western astrology mostly times life through transits, progressions and solar returns. Vedic astrology uses transits too, but it puts a planetary timetable underneath them: the dasha tells you which planet’s themes are in the foreground, and transits show how that chapter is being stirred up this month.

The closest Western relatives are the Hellenistic time-lord techniques, such as annual profections and zodiacal releasing, which also hand the year or the chapter to one planet at a time. If you have used those, dashas will feel familiar. The dasha is read from the sidereal zodiac, so use your Vedic Moon position, not your Western one.

How much your birth time matters

More than for most calculations. The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, and your progress through the birth nakshatra sets the balance of the first period. A time that is off by an hour can move later period boundaries by weeks or months, so if your recorded time is approximate, treat the dates near a change as approximate too.

A dasha names a theme, not a verdict. A Saturn period that asks for patience and structure can be one of the most productive stretches of a life. How it plays out depends on Saturn’s condition in your chart and the transits running through it, and that day-to-day layer is what the Vedara app reads.

What is the Vimshottari dasha system?

Is there a Western equivalent of a dasha?
