How this calculation works
Sade Sati is defined from your natal Moon. Vedara finds your Moon sign from your birth details, then treats Sade Sati as active whenever transiting Saturn is in the twelfth, first, or second sign from that Moon sign. Those three signs make up the three phases: the rising phase in the twelfth sign, the peak phase on the Moon sign itself, and the setting phase in the second sign.
To get the dates right, the calculator reads Saturn position directly from the Swiss Ephemeris in the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsha, and searches for the exact moments Saturn crosses each sign boundary. This is why the phase and cycle dates match published Lahiri almanacs rather than relying on a fixed seven and a half year estimate.
Saturn does not move at a constant speed. It slows, stops, and retrogrades for part of each year, so near a sign boundary it can cross forward, slip back, and cross again. Vedara detects every crossing, starts each phase at the first entry into its sign, and ends the whole cycle at the final exit, and it lists any retrograde crossings so the picture is complete.
The three phases
The rising phase, with Saturn in the twelfth sign from your Moon, is often about endings, rest, and quiet preparation. The peak phase, with Saturn on your Moon sign, is usually the most intense, a time of responsibility and maturing. The setting phase, with Saturn in the second sign from your Moon, tends to touch money, family, and speech, and it eases as Saturn moves toward leaving.
This tool labels the phase you are in and shows the exact date each phase begins, so you can see where you are in the arc rather than only whether Sade Sati is on or off.
Worked example
Take a fictional person whose natal Moon is in Aquarius, checked on 24 July 2026. For an Aquarius Moon the three Sade Sati signs are Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces.
Saturn entered Capricorn on 24 January 2020, which began the cycle, moved onto Aquarius on 29 April 2022 for the peak, and entered Pisces on 29 March 2025 for the setting phase. On 24 July 2026 Saturn is in Pisces, so this person is in the setting phase. The cycle finally ends on 23 February 2028, after Saturn briefly steps into Aries in mid 2027, retrogrades back into Pisces in October 2027, and then leaves for good. The previous cycle ran from 1990 to 1998 and the next runs from 2049 to 2057. This is a fictional example for illustration only.
Limitations and assumptions
Sade Sati depends only on your natal Moon sign, so an exact birth time is not required. The Moon sign is stable across a day, so this tool lets you leave the time blank and uses noon. If you were born very near a Moon sign boundary, confirm your Moon sign with the Moon Sign calculator before relying on the result.
Boundary dates are computed in UTC and shown to the day. Because Saturn moves slowly, a nearby time zone will rarely change the date, but very close to a crossing the local date could differ by one day.
Positions use the Lahiri ayanamsha. Practitioners who prefer another ayanamsha, such as Krishnamurti or Raman, will see slightly different crossing dates, which near a boundary can shift a phase.
Methodology
Ephemeris: Swiss Ephemeris (pyswisseph 2.10.3.2), used directly for Saturn in sidereal mode with the Lahiri ayanamsha. Zodiac: sidereal. The natal Moon sign uses the same Vedara Moon engine as the Moon Sign calculator, so the two tools agree.
Cycle logic: Sade Sati is active when Saturn is in the twelfth, first, or second sign from the natal Moon. Saturn sign-boundary crossings are found by scanning the ephemeris and refining each crossing by binary search. A cycle starts at the first entry into the twelfth sign and ends at the final exit from the second sign, merging any retrograde re-entries so the cycle is a single continuous span. Retrograde crossings are listed separately.
Input handling: birth date (YYYY-MM-DD), optional birth time (HH:MM, 24-hour, defaults to noon), birth coordinates, IANA timezone id, and an optional calculation date that defaults to today. - Why do Sade Sati calculators differ?
- The two main reasons are the ayanamsha and the ephemeris. Vedara uses the Lahiri ayanamsha, the Indian government standard, and the Swiss Ephemeris, which reproduces published Lahiri Saturn ingress dates to the day. Calculators that use a different ayanamsha, a rougher planetary model, or a fixed seven and a half year estimate rather than real ingress dates can differ by several days, and near a boundary that can even change which phase you are shown.
- Is Sade Sati necessarily negative?
- No. Sade Sati has a difficult reputation, but Saturn is the planet of discipline, structure, and maturity, and the period is better understood as demanding than as harmful. Many people build their most lasting achievements during it. This tool deliberately describes the phases in neutral, practical terms and does not predict misfortune. How the period unfolds depends on your whole chart and on how you respond.
