How this calculation works
This tool detects Mangal Dosha by checking whether Mars falls in whole-sign houses 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, or 12 counted from either the Lagna or the Moon in the sidereal birth chart. If Mars occupies one of these houses from at least one of those two reference points, the chart is described as having Mangal Dosha under method vedara_manglik_v1.
Venus is not used as a reference point in this version. Some traditions check Mars from Venus as well; this tool does not, and the result says so explicitly. The result is descriptive, not a forecast of marriage outcomes.
When Mangal Dosha is present, the tool checks three conservative traditional mitigating factors: Mars in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio), Mars in its exaltation sign (Capricorn), and Jupiter aspecting Mars by whole-sign graha drishti (the 5th, 7th, or 9th rashi aspect). These are reported as traditional considerations, not as guaranteed cancellations.
Reference points and house counting
The two reference points are the Lagna (ascendant) and the Moon. House counting is whole-sign: the reference point's sign is the first house, the next sign in zodiacal order is the second house, and so on. Mars's house from each reference is the whole-sign count from that reference sign to the sign Mars occupies.
The six houses that trigger Mangal Dosha are the same from both reference points: 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, and 12. If Mars is in any of these from the Lagna or the Moon, Mangal Dosha is considered present. Both reference results are shown in the result table so you can see the full picture.
Mitigating factors
Mitigating factors are only evaluated when Mangal Dosha is present; there is nothing to mitigate when it is absent. The three checked here are drawn from widely cited classical Jyotish sources. Mars in its own sign or exaltation is considered to express well-directed energy, softening the Dosha. Jupiter aspecting Mars by graha drishti brings a benefic influence that classical texts most commonly cite as the strongest available mitigation.
The both-partners-Manglik rule, under which Mangal Dosha in both charts is traditionally held to neutralise, requires a second chart and is mentioned only as a context note. It is not evaluated here. No mitigating factor is presented as a cancellation or as a reason the Dosha "does not matter"; weight and interpretation vary across traditions.
Limitations and assumptions
An accurate birth time is required because the ascendant sign changes roughly every two hours, and an incorrect birth time can place the Lagna in the wrong sign, which shifts the house count for Mars and can flip the result.
This tool uses whole-sign houses throughout. In other house systems (Placidus, Koch, Porphyry), the house occupied by a planet can differ; this tool does not support those systems for Mangal Dosha.
Age-based modifications to Mangal Dosha found in some popular traditions are not computed. The result reflects only the natal chart.
Methodology
Ephemeris: Swiss Ephemeris (pyswisseph 2.10.3.2) in sidereal mode with the Lahiri ayanamsha (Chitrapaksha). Ascendant via Swiss Ephemeris houses (whole-sign). Mars, Moon, and Jupiter via Swiss Ephemeris sidereal planetary positions. Zodiac: sidereal. House system: whole-sign.
Mangal Dosha detection (method vedara_manglik_v1): Mars in whole-sign houses 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, or 12 from the Lagna or the Moon. Venus reference: not used (deliberate v1 scope choice, disclosed in result). Mitigating factors checked: Mars in own sign (Aries/Scorpio), Mars exalted (Capricorn), Jupiter graha drishti on Mars (5th/7th/9th rashi aspect, Parashari system). None of these are guaranteed cancellations.
Frequently asked questions
- What is Manglik Dosha (Mangal Dosha)?
- Manglik Dosha, also called Mangal Dosha or Kuja Dosha, is a traditional Vedic astrology consideration that arises when Mars occupies one of six specific houses in the birth chart counted from the Lagna (ascendant) or the Moon: the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th. In classical Jyotish, these houses are associated with the self, family and speech, home and comforts, marriage and partnerships, longevity and shared resources, and expenditure. When Mars falls in any of these positions from either reference point, the chart is described as having Mangal Dosha. It is one of the most widely known concepts in Vedic astrology and is very common in practice.
- Does being Manglik decide my marriage?
- No. Mangal Dosha is a traditional factor in a Vedic chart reading, not a fixed outcome for your marriage. Whether Dosha is present is one data point among many, including the strength and dignity of Venus, the 7th house lord, dasha timings, and the rest of the chart. Traditions vary considerably: some assign weight only when Mars is in the 7th or 8th house, others use all six houses, and still others consider multiple reference points. Mitigating factors such as Mars in its own sign, exaltation, or under Jupiter's aspect are also recognised across traditions. The result this tool produces is descriptive, not deterministic.
- How common is Manglik Dosha?
- Very common. When you count six houses from both the Lagna and the Moon, a large proportion of birth charts show Mars in at least one of those positions. Estimates of how common vary depending on which houses and reference points a tradition uses, but broad surveys of chart collections consistently find Mangal Dosha present in roughly a third to half of all charts or more, depending on the definition applied. The high prevalence is one reason most classical texts also describe mitigating conditions rather than treating it as an absolute.
- Why does this tool use the Lagna and the Moon but not Venus?
- This is a deliberate scope choice for version 1 of this tool. The most widely cited traditional sources check Mars from the Lagna and the Moon. Some regional traditions and individual astrologers also check from Venus, particularly because Venus is the natural significator of relationships. We do not include the Venus reference in this version and say so plainly in the result. A chart that comes out negative from the Lagna and the Moon but would be flagged from Venus under another tradition will simply show as not flagged here. We will consider adding the Venus reference in a future version.
- Which houses count, and why?
- The six houses traditionally associated with Mangal Dosha are the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, and 12th counted from the Lagna or the Moon in whole-sign reckoning. The 1st house represents the self and physical body; the 2nd, family life and speech; the 4th, home, domestic harmony, and comforts; the 7th, marriage and partnerships directly; the 8th, longevity and shared assets in a marriage; and the 12th, the marital bed and expenditure. Mars in these positions is held by tradition to create friction or imbalance in those areas. Different texts assign different weights to each house, and not all traditions treat all six equally.
- What can mitigate Mangal Dosha?
- Classical Jyotish texts describe several traditional mitigating conditions. This tool checks three conservative ones. First, if Mars is in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio), it is considered to express its energy well rather than disruptively. Second, if Mars is in its exaltation sign (Capricorn), it is in its strongest dignity, which traditions hold softens the Dosha. Third, if Jupiter aspects Mars by whole-sign graha drishti (the 5th, 7th, or 9th rashi aspect), Jupiter's benefic influence is the most widely cited mitigation in classical sources. A fourth often-cited rule, that both partners being Manglik traditionally neutralises the Dosha, requires a second chart and is noted in context but not evaluated here. None of these factors are presented as guaranteed cancellations; their weight varies across traditions.
- Does Manglik Dosha weaken with age?
- Some popular Jyotish traditions hold that Mangal Dosha weakens or loses significance after a certain age, commonly cited as 28 or 30 years. This belief is not universally accepted across classical texts, and the basis for any specific age threshold varies. This tool, operating under method vedara_manglik_v1, does not compute age-based modifications to Mangal Dosha. The result reflects the natal chart as calculated from your birth data only, without any adjustment for your current age.
- What ayanamsha and ephemeris does this use?
- All positions are computed using the Swiss Ephemeris (pyswisseph) in sidereal mode with the Lahiri ayanamsha (Chitrapaksha). Houses are whole-sign. The ascendant is resolved via the Swiss Ephemeris house calculation, and Mars, Moon, and Jupiter are computed via the Swiss Ephemeris sidereal planetary positions. Using a single ephemeris path for all bodies ensures that the rashi (sign) assignment for each is internally consistent, which matters most near sign boundaries. This is a slightly different Lahiri path from the one the Vedara Moon Sign calculator uses, so if your natal Moon sits very close to a sign boundary, the two tools may occasionally differ by a fraction of a degree.
