How this calculation works
This tool finds the naming sound tied to the pada of your natal Moon. The Moon's sidereal longitude is computed with the Swiss Ephemeris using the Lahiri ayanamsha, then converted to a pada. Each nakshatra is one of 27 lunar mansions, and each nakshatra is divided into four padas, giving 108 padas in total. Each pada has one traditional starting sound.
The pada is derived in exact arcseconds. A pada is 3 degrees and 20 minutes wide, which is exactly 12,000 arcseconds, and the pada index is the Moon's longitude in arcseconds divided by 12,000. Using exact arcseconds rather than rounded decimals keeps the result correct even when the Moon is close to a pada boundary.
The pada-to-sound mapping is traditional doctrine associated with the Swar Siddhanta naming-sound system. The transliteration shown here was authored independently from the devanagari and cross-checked against the Wikipedia nakshatra table. This is a naming custom, presented neutrally; the tool maps to a sound and never suggests a name.
Nakshatra, pada, and the naming sound
The 27 nakshatras each span 13 degrees and 20 minutes of the zodiac, and each divides into four equal padas of 3 degrees and 20 minutes. The Moon's pada at birth is the seed of many Vedic timing calculations, and in the naming custom it also carries a traditional starting sound, an akshara.
The tool returns that sound three ways: the devanagari akshara, the IAST transliteration with diacritics, and the common latin variants. Showing all three removes the ambiguity of a single romanized spelling, where similar looking letters can stand for different sounds.
Why birth time matters
The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, so it crosses a pada boundary roughly every six hours. Across a single day it can pass through two or three padas, and therefore two or three different naming sounds.
With a birth time, the tool pins the exact pada. Without one, it uses noon and lists every pada the Moon occupied on that day, so you can see all the sounds it could be. A birth time is the only way to narrow it to one.

The mapping from pada to sound is traditional fact, associated with the classical Swar Siddhanta doctrine. Facts of this kind are not owned by any one publisher. The transliteration here was authored independently and cross-verified against the devanagari in the Wikipedia nakshatra table.
Drik Panchang, a modern website, publishes a version of this list and was consulted only as a modern secondary reference. It is not a classical source, and its table was not reproduced. The dataset records its sources, access dates and the one tradition-split cell that was resolved by an explicit editorial choice.

Ephemeris: Swiss Ephemeris (pyswisseph 2.10.3.2) in sidereal mode with the Lahiri ayanamsha (Chitrapaksha). The Moon's sidereal longitude comes from a single Swiss Ephemeris sidereal path. Zodiac: sidereal.
Pada derivation: pada index equals the Moon's sidereal longitude in arcseconds divided by 12,000, as a whole number from 0 to 107. Naming sound: read from the reviewed Swar Siddhanta naming-sound dataset, version 1.0.0. Birth time is optional; if it is unknown, noon is used and all padas crossed that day are listed.
