How to Build Your Own True Love ‘Soulmate Calculator’ That Actually Tells You Something Useful

TL;DR
- •Time: 60–90 minutes. Difficulty: Medium.
- •You will build a repeatable “true love calculator soulmate” framework using clear, Vedic-style rules, not vibes.
- •End result: a spreadsheet or Notion board that gives consistent, explainable scores and timing flags.
Most “true love calculator soulmate” tools online are just theatre. Type in your name, your crush’s name, and you get a percentage that changes if you add a middle initial. Same inputs, different outputs. That is entertainment, not a system.
We take the opposite stance: if a soulmate calculator cannot be explained, audited, and repeated, it is useless. You might as well flip a coin. This guide is for you if you want a love calculator that behaves more like an engineering checklist than a BuzzFeed quiz.
We will not promise to reveal “the one”. What we will do is show you how to:
- Define what “true love” actually means in your life.
- Translate that into deterministic compatibility rules (same inputs → same score).
- Layer in timing, using a simplified version of the Vedic timing logic we use inside Vedara.
By the end you will have your own soulmate calculator: probably a spreadsheet, maybe a Notion template, definitely something you control and can refine.

What you need first (prerequisites, setup)
Before you build anything, you need three things:
- A working definition of “true love” that is not just vibes.
- A small set of input variables you can actually know about someone.
- A place to implement logic: a spreadsheet is enough.
If you like astrology, you can add chart-based inputs. If you are sceptical, you can skip charts and still build a solid calculator. We will show both paths and keep astrology as an optional layer, not a requirement.
For the astrological version, you will need:
- Birth date, time, and place for you and the other person (even if the time is approximate).
- Any astrology tool that gives you at least: Moon sign, Ascendant, and 7th house lord for both people.
We explained why birth time accuracy matters so much for the Ascendant in our guide to rising signs and birth time. For this project, a ±30 minute error is usually acceptable, as long as it does not flip the Ascendant.
Set up a blank spreadsheet with one row per person you are evaluating, and one row reserved for yourself.
Step 1: Decide what “true love” means in your system
What to do
Write down 5–8 non-negotiable ingredients of “true love” for you. Focus on relationship behaviours, not generic personality traits. For example:
- We solve problems without stonewalling.
- We agree on having or not having children.
- We have compatible attitudes to money risk.
- Sex feels safe, not performative.
- We can plan 3–5 years ahead without one of us panicking.
Turn each into a dimension with a 0–3 scale:
- 0 = incompatible
- 1 = serious friction
- 2 = workable with effort
- 3 = feels natural
Why this matters
Most soulmate calculators fail because they never define the output. “Soulmate” is treated like a mystical label. In Vedic compatibility work, we break it into concrete dimensions: emotional wavelength, timing compatibility, shared direction, pressure resilience. Then we assign weights.
Skip this step and every score your calculator produces becomes arbitrary.
Common mistake to avoid
Do not start with star signs or charts. Start with your real-life constraints. If you know you never want children, a 99% “soulmate” score with someone who wants three kids is fantasy. Your calculator has to respect your reality or it will lie to you.
Add each dimension as a column in your spreadsheet.
Step 2: Choose your inputs (what your calculator can actually know)
What to do
Now decide which inputs your true love calculator soulmate logic will use. Split them into two groups:
-
Observable data you can know early on:
- Age range
- Location / relocation flexibility
- Desire for children (yes/no/unsure)
- Money attitude (spender/saver/balanced)
- Relationship intention (casual/long-term/undecided)
-
Optional astrological data (if you want a deeper layer):
- Moon sign for emotional style.
- Rising sign and 7th house condition for partnership patterns.
- Current major timing cycle (Dasha Mahadasha) if using Vedic methods.
Put each of these as input columns. Your rules will reference them to fill in the 0–3 scores for your dimensions.
Why this matters
A calculator is only as good as its inputs. In Vedic astrology we never read compatibility from Sun signs alone, because Sun sign by itself is a blunt tool for relationships. We look at Moon, 7th house, Venus, Saturn, and timing cycles together.
Your DIY tool needs similar discipline. If an input is too vague or impossible to obtain, drop it.
Common mistake to avoid
Do not collect data you will never use. If you add “favourite music genre” but cannot explain how it maps to any of your relationship dimensions, it becomes noise, not signal.
Step 3: Build your base compatibility grid (behaviour first)
What to do
Create a section in your spreadsheet where each row is one of your “true love” dimensions from Step 1, and each column is:
- Behavioural rule text.
- Score for Person A (you) vs Person B.
- Notes / examples.
For each dimension, write simple if/then rules based on your inputs. For example:
-
Children dimension:
- If both want kids → 3
- If both do not want kids → 3
- If one wants, one unsure → 1 or 2 (your call)
- If one wants, one firmly does not want → 0
-
Money risk dimension:
- If both “spender” or both “saver” or both “balanced” → 3
- If “spender” with “balanced” → 2
- If “spender” with “saver” → 1
Apply these rules row by row and let the spreadsheet calculate a subtotal.
Why this matters
This is your non-astrological soulmate calculator. It is already more honest than any name-matching app, because it ties the score to real choices and daily life.
In our own compatibility framework at Vedara, we do something similar under the hood: each factor (Moon emotional fit, 7th house dynamics, Venus-Mars chemistry, Saturn-Moon resilience, and timing synchronicity) gets a weight and sub-score, then we aggregate.
Common mistake to avoid
Do not use equal weights by default. If conflict style matters more to you than shared hobbies, give conflict style double weight and reflect that in your formulas.
Step 4: Add a simple astrology layer (if you want it)
If you are allergic to astrology, skip to Step 5. Your calculator will still work just fine.
What to do
If you want to integrate charts, add three extra columns:
- Emotional wavelength (Moon-to-Moon fit) 0–3.
- Partnership style fit (7th house logic) 0–3.
- Long-term resilience (Saturn–Moon or Saturn–Venus pattern) 0–3.
You will need a birth chart for both of you from any Vedic-capable tool.
Use simple starter rules:
-
Emotional wavelength:
- Same Moon sign or same element (Water with Water, Air with Air, etc.) → 3
- Complementary elements (Water with Earth, Fire with Air) → 2
- Tension elements (Fire with Water, Air with Earth) → 1
-
Partnership style:
- If both 7th house lords are in friendly signs → 3
- If one or both 7th house lords in 6th, 8th or 12th houses → 1
- Otherwise → 2
This is a stripped-down version of how we approach compatibility in our own system, where we also weigh Venus-Mars and timing. We go deeper on chart-based commitment patterns in our piece on Juno in astrology.
Why this matters
Here you move from “what we say and think we want” to “how we tend to behave when stressed”. The Moon and 7th house in Vedic astrology consistently describe that pattern in both classical Jyotish texts like Parashara Hora Shastra [Parashara, classical] and modern work by K.N. Rao [Rao, 2002].
Common mistake to avoid
Do not auto-reject someone because of one difficult indicator. A 7th lord in the 8th can describe deep transformation in relationships, but it can also show intense loyalty after early turbulence, especially if strengthened by dignity rules [Raman, 1995]. Treat the astrology layer as extra context, not an automatic veto.
Step 5: Turn everything into a single score (with thresholds)
What to do
Now combine your behavioural subtotal with your optional astrology subtotal.
Example structure:
- Behavioural subtotal max = 30 points.
- Astrology subtotal max = 9 points.
- Overall max = 39.
Decide on thresholds that give clear labels. For example:
- 32–39 → “High structural compatibility.”
- 24–31 → “Workable with conscious effort.”
- 16–23 → “High-maintenance connection.”
- 0–15 → “Core life goals misaligned.”
Set your spreadsheet to calculate:
- Total score.
- Label based on thresholds.
Why this matters
A soulmate calculator that cannot say “this is probably not a good idea” is pointless. The whole aim of a system is to encode deal-breakers and trade-offs so you do not keep rationalising obviously misaligned connections.
When we build compatibility logic for Vedara, we are direct about this. A couple with strong chemistry but 7th house lords in 6–8 relationship (chronic friction) and mismatched timing cycles gets a different label to a couple with moderate chemistry but stable timing. We walk through this trade-off logic in our guide to the best zodiac pairs for marriage.
Common mistake to avoid
Do not treat the score as a prophecy. A 25/39 is not “doomed”, it is a signal that the relationship will demand more conscious work and better timing.
This is where personal timing matters. Vedara shows your daily timing windows based on your birth data. See My Personal Timing
Step 6: Add a timing row (when, not just who)
Most soulmate calculators pretend time does not exist. That is where they fall apart.
What to do
Create a simple timing layer with three columns you can fill manually or with help from a Vedic tool:
- Your current major cycle (Mahadasha) planet.
- Their current major cycle planet.
- Relationship timing label: “green”, “amber”, or “red” for long-term moves.
Use this template logic, based on the Vimshottari system [Raman, 1995]:
- If either person is in Ketu or early Saturn Mahadasha → label as “amber” for marriage decisions (high inner churn).
- If one is in Jupiter or Venus Mahadasha and the other in Saturn or Rahu → “amber” for moving in together (mismatch in expansion vs consolidation focus).
- If both are in stable growth Mahadashas (Jupiter, Venus, well-placed Mercury) → “green” for serious planning.
Keep it coarse on purpose. The goal is not detailed event prediction, but to mark how life focus is being pulled.
Why this matters
In Vedic work we see the same pattern repeatedly: the same couple feels impossible in one timing window and workable in another. Major planetary periods tilt life towards expansion, consolidation, or detachment on a predictable 120-year schedule [Parashara, classical].
Your calculator should capture that someone can be a high-compatibility partner whose timing is currently off for taking on more commitments.
Common mistake to avoid
Do not label any Mahadasha as universally “bad for love”. That is superstition. Even a tough Saturn or Rahu period can be when you build the most honest relationships, but they tend to expose illusions rather than support fantasy.
Step 7: Add deal-breaker flags
What to do
Lastly, add a brief text field for “hard no” flags your calculator must respect regardless of score. Examples:
- Verbal, emotional, or physical abuse.
- Persistent lying about major issues.
- Addictions with denial and no treatment.
- Completely opposite life paths (e.g. you want monogamy, they want committed non-monogamy and will not negotiate).
If any of these are present, your tool should return: “Do not proceed, regardless of compatibility score.”
You can implement this as a simple checkbox that, when ticked, overrides any formula and outputs that sentence.
Why this matters
A lot of “soulmate” language is used to justify staying in harmful situations. A responsible calculator has a built-in circuit breaker. In our content on tough dynamics, like Leo and Cancer in a toxic loop, we draw a hard line between “intense but workable” and “structurally damaging”. Your DIY tool should do the same.
Common mistake to avoid
Do not put soft preferences (height, favourite music, aesthetics) into the hard-no list. Keep this for safety and non-negotiable ethics only.
What to do if it is not working
If you have built your “true love calculator soulmate” sheet and it still feels off, look for these issues.
-
Your definition of “true love” is vague.
If your dimensions are fuzzy (“we vibe well”, “we are spiritual”), the scores will be fuzzy. Rewrite each dimension so your friend could score it without knowing the backstory. -
You are changing rules mid-way.
If you bump scores because “but they are different when we are alone”, your system collapses. Log the urge to override, then revisit your rules later. Rules can evolve, but not on a per-person basis. -
You overloaded the astrology layer.
If you gave astrology 70% of the weight, tiny chart differences will swing the output wildly. Keep the chart layer as a modifier, not the core. -
Your timing labels are too binary.
Instead of “good/bad time for love”, frame labels as “easier to stabilise vs easier to experiment”. For example, a Rahu period might be great for meeting unusual people but messy for marriage paperwork. -
You are ignoring lived evidence.
If your calculator says 36/39 and you feel consistently drained, the system needs an update. A deterministic tool should explain your reality, not erase it.
Treat this as version 1. The first version of any timing or compatibility framework is rough. The discipline is: same inputs, same outputs, and a clear change log when you update rules.
Stop guessing when to push, pause or prepare.
